WooCommerce vs Shopify: Which Should Nigerian Businesses Use in 2026?

By Tobi Arowosegbe · WordPress & ecommerce developer, Lagos · Updated August 2026

This decision gets made too quickly, usually based on whichever platform a friend used. Both are solid choices — the right one depends on your budget shape, technical comfort, and how much control you want over the checkout experience.

Cost structure: the real difference

WooCommerce is free software running on WordPress, but you pay for hosting (₦30,000–₦150,000/year for reasonable shared hosting) and any premium plugins/themes you choose. No mandatory monthly platform fee, no transaction fee cut from every sale.

Shopify charges a monthly subscription ($29+/month, roughly ₦45,000+/month at 2026 rates) plus, depending on your plan and payment provider, a transaction fee on top. For a store doing meaningful volume, this recurring cost adds up fast compared to WooCommerce's one-time-per-year hosting cost.

Payment gateways: Nigeria-specific reality

This is where the decision often actually gets made. Paystack and Flutterwave — the two dominant Nigerian payment processors — have first-class, well-maintained WooCommerce plugins. Shopify's native payment support for Nigerian gateways is more limited; Shopify Payments itself isn't available in Nigeria, so you're routing through a third-party gateway integration regardless, which can add friction and, in some cases, extra fees.

Where WooCommerce wins

Where Shopify wins

My actual recommendation

For a Nigeria-focused store on a tight budget, prioritizing Paystack/Flutterwave and wanting full control: WooCommerce, on solid hosting, built and maintained properly. For a store planning to sell heavily internationally, or run by someone who wants to manage it without ever thinking about hosting or plugin updates: Shopify. The "which is more powerful" argument matters less than which one matches how you'll actually operate day to day.

I build and maintain both WooCommerce and Shopify stores, with Paystack/Flutterwave integration handled correctly from day one.
