How to Fix Google Merchant Center Product Feed Errors

By Tobi Arowosegbe · Technical SEO specialist, Lagos · Updated August 2026

Google Merchant Center is unforgiving. A feed with a handful of formatting problems can result in half your catalog silently disapproved, with no traffic impact you'd notice unless you check the Diagnostics tab regularly. This is the fix-list I go through on almost every ecommerce SEO engagement, ranked by how often I actually see each one.

1. Missing or mismatched GTIN/MPN

The error: "Missing value [gtin]" or a GTIN/brand/MPN mismatch.

The fix: For branded products, supply a correct GTIN (barcode number) wherever one exists. If you're selling a genuinely unique or custom product with no GTIN, explicitly set identifier_exists = false in the feed rather than leaving the field empty — leaving it blank is what triggers the disapproval, not the absence of a GTIN itself.

2. Image link issues

The error: "Image link, crawl issue" or "Image too small."

The fix: Product images need to be reachable by Googlebot directly (no login walls, no CDN blocking the crawler), at least 100×100px (800×800px+ recommended for apparel), with no promotional text or watermarks overlaid on the image itself — that's a policy violation, not just a quality suggestion.

3. Price or availability mismatch

The error: "Price mismatch" between what's in your feed and what's shown on your landing page at the moment Google checks it.

The fix: This is almost always a sync problem — your feed says one price, your site (after a currency plugin, a sale, or a caching issue) shows another. If you're on WooCommerce, use a feed plugin (Google Listings & Ads, or a dedicated feed plugin) that pulls live from your actual product data rather than a stale exported CSV. Clear caching after price changes.

4. Missing shipping information

The error: "Missing shipping information," especially common for stores targeting Nigeria where shipping setup in Merchant Center is often skipped entirely.

The fix: Set up shipping settings directly in Merchant Center (flat rate, or rules by region) rather than relying only on your site's checkout logic — Google reads the Merchant Center configuration, not your site's shipping calculator.

5. Policy violations for restricted or misrepresented content

The error: Account-level suspension or product-level disapproval for "misrepresentation" or restricted content.

The fix: Common, avoidable triggers: exaggerated claims ("cures," "guaranteed" without substantiation for health/beauty products), missing business contact information on your site, or a checkout process that doesn't clearly show total price including any fees before payment. Fix the underlying page, then request a review — don't just resubmit the same feed.

6. Feed not updating / stale data

The error: No explicit error, but product data in Google Shopping doesn't reflect recent site changes.

The fix: Check your feed's fetch schedule in Merchant Center. Manually uploaded CSV feeds are the most common cause of staleness — switch to a scheduled fetch (Google pulling from a URL on a set interval) or an API-connected plugin so updates propagate without manual re-uploads.

Merchant Center errors compound: one structural issue in your feed template can cause dozens of individual product disapprovals that look unrelated in the Diagnostics view. Fix the template-level cause first, then re-check the count before chasing individual SKUs.

How to check your current feed health

  1. Go to Merchant Center → Products → Diagnostics.
  2. Sort issues by number of affected products, not alphabetically — fix the highest-impact issue first.
  3. Use the "Preview" option on a sample product to see exactly what Google is reading from your feed right now.
  4. After fixing the feed source, request a re-crawl rather than waiting for the next scheduled fetch.
