Domain Name and Hosting Checklist Before You Launch a Website in Nigeria
Most launch problems I get called in to fix trace back to decisions made in the first hour of setting up a domain and hosting account. This checklist prevents the majority of them.
Domain name
- Register it yourself, in your own account — not your developer's, not your marketing agency's. This is the single most important item on this list. Domains registered in someone else's account have caused real, painful ownership disputes when the relationship ends badly.
- Prefer .com for broad credibility, or .com.ng if you specifically want to signal a Nigerian business identity — both are reasonable, pick deliberately rather than by accident.
- Enable auto-renewal and keep the payment method on the account current — an expired domain can be snapped up by someone else within days.
- Use a real, monitored email address as the registration contact, not a throwaway — renewal and security notices go there.
Hosting
- Own the hosting account — same principle as the domain. If a developer sets it up for you, get it transferred into your name and payment method before launch, not "eventually."
- Confirm what's actually included: SSL, email accounts, backups, and support level, before comparing price alone.
- Know your login credentials and keep them somewhere secure and accessible to you, not only to whoever built the site.
Before you go live
- SSL is active and the site loads on
https://with no mixed-content warnings. - A working contact form or clear contact details are tested end-to-end (send yourself a real test message).
- Google Search Console and Google Analytics are set up and verified, in your own Google account.
- An XML sitemap exists and is submitted to Search Console.
- Mobile display is checked on an actual phone, not just a browser's device emulator.
- A backup exists of the finished site before it goes fully live, in case anything needs rolling back.
After launch
- Set a calendar reminder for domain and hosting renewal dates, independent of auto-renewal, as a backup check.
- Check Search Console weekly for the first month for indexing errors or security issues.
- Confirm whoever set up the site has actually handed over full admin access and documentation, not just "it's working, don't worry about it."
If you remember nothing else from this list: own your domain and hosting accounts, in your own name, with your own payment method, from day one. Every other mistake on this list is fixable after the fact. That one, if it goes wrong, sometimes isn't.
